November 2009 Newsletter

Welcome to Elephant Human Relations Aid!
This is the first of many newsletters you can expect to receive through our new and improved website!

We hope you will enjoy the new site which enables us to keep in better contact with our supporters and keep you up to date with developments in the field. The new site is packed with information about EHRA, the desert elephants and our volunteer and schools projects. There are also some of our favourite photos of the elephants throughout the site which is www.desertelephant.org.

We have also created a new Facebook page where we will also be adding regular updates and photos so please take a look and become a fan!

Two Births for The Ugab Herds
We are very happy to welcome two new babies to the Ugab Herds. Over the past 6 years there has been a very high level of calf mortality amongst the herds that predominantly patrol the Ugab, so we hope these two break that pattern and remain healthy. In addition it was noted on the last patrol that a cow from H1 in the Huab River is pregnant. We will keep you updated!

Cynthia is named after Rob Conlon's mother. Rob came to volunteer with EHRA in July for 8 weeks and stayed on to work for EHRA with the volunteer groups for a further 2 months. Thanks to Rob for all the hard work!

Carissa is named after our friend Carissa Oosthuizen, from Okahandja in Namibia, who spotted her on 24th October in the Ugab River whilst with a group of friends from her school and EHRA.

The 3rd Annual Fundraising Trek for EHRA - A Great Success!
A fabulous group of volunteers walked 123km through Damaraland in temperatures over 35-40 degrees, over 5 days, to raise money for EHRA's conservation projects. A huge thank you and congratulations goes to Cailin Human from Cape Town, Jen Carpenter from Dublin, Mark and Margie Adcock from Ngepi Camp in Namibia, Hazel Youngs from the States, Tony Pateman, Phil Colbert, Jane Rimnington, Lynne Thorne and Barbara Cheney all from the UK.

In addition a big thank you goes to Gerson and Doreen from EHRA for working so hard on the camp logistics. The group raised over $100,000 Namibia dollars which will help fund the planned collaring project for the bulls of the Ugab Basin. For more photos of the antics of the week please take a look at the photos section of the website.

We will be running the trek in October 2010 and anyone who is interested should click here to read about the itinerary or contact Rachel

2009 Trekkers

Volunteer for EHRA in 2010

We are already taking bookings for the volunteer project in 2010, starting on the 1st February and running every 2 weeks throughout the year. The beginning of the year is always an interesting time in Damaraland with elephants moving into the higher farm lands as the rains start and the rivers start to flow! We are running a discounted price for anyone joining the project throughout February-April so contact Victro or Rachel for more information and take a look at the volunteer section on the site.

Thanks for your support!
Best Wishes,
The EHRA Team
