Namibia Volunteer Projects - A. Gariseb Primary School Project

EHRA has been working with A. Gariseb Primary School in Anixab on the Ugab River for the last few years. We are working with the school to improve facilities for the 200 children who attend and have set up a partnership scheme with King Alfred's School in London, UK.

So far King Alfred's and EHRA have newly renovated classrooms, dormitories and washrooms and we have recently installed a computer room. Soon the school will be connected to the internet and we are working on the establishment of a library of books donated from The East Hampton Library, USA.

Every year a group of King Alfred's pupils fundraise for the school and take part in a 2-week expedition with EHRA. The first week is spent at A. Gariseb Primary School where pupils renovate buildings, give computer training and even take Maths and English classes. The week is a wonderful opportunity for children of very different backgrounds to interact and learn from each other.

The second week is spent trekking in the local area learning about flora and fauna, survival skills and teamwork. There is still much more work to be done but already the change is massive, not only to the physical appearance of the school but also the understanding and development of young minds.

If you are a teacher and would like more information on the partnership scheme with A. Gariseb Primary School please contact us.

The intention is to turn this into a fully independent volunteer scheme to run alongside other EHRA projects. this would involve living locally and teaching at the school whilst also helping with renovation work. If you are interested in this opportunity please contact us so we can keep you informed.
